I wish there were some incredible tale to tell about my life, but it is pretty hum-drum. I was born November 16, 1970 in Willmar, MN. From birth to age 5, we moved to various cities, Fargo, ND; Muskegon, MI, Circle Pines, MN and then finally to Montgomery, AL where I was raised from age 5 until I struck out on my own at 21. Why did I grow up in Alabama? Because that was as far as Dad could get from his in-laws. Why did I leave? Because it was ALABAMA.
After graduating from Robert E Lee Sr High (well, it WAS in Alabama) I tried to spread my academic wings by attending Auburn University (it WASN'T Alabama) pursuing a double major in Communications and Theatre. I left school after 2 years in order to help my mother absorb some of the financial burden left to her when dad died.
When I turned 21, I headed back to Minnesota (it was pretty darned far from Alabama) and entered the Insurance industry. I found that it was quite rewarding financially - I was able to help pay College Tuition for my younger brothers - but I didn't find it personally fulfilling. November of 1994, in what some may call a break with my senses, I left 6 figures in Insurance and started making $5 an hour working at a small radio station in rural Minnesota. This is where I learned that money really can't buy happiness, but it does keep the roof over your head.
My first major "career move" took me back to Montgomery Alabama. As a child, I grew up listening to the very station that I came to work for as an adult. From Alabama, I have traveled to Burlington VT, Sioux City IA (a move I would not recommend), Duluth MN and most recently New Orleans. You could say that my move to Billings was inspired by Storm Surge. The reality is that while my home survived Katrina, my job did not. Because my wife and I are both originally from the snow belt, we decided to find a place that actually had "winter" (and NO Hurricanes).
In my little bits of spare time, I like to spend time with my wife - Tennille and our friends. We'll watch movies (I've seen "E. T." more than 50 times and still get wet eyes every time), try to tackle the endless list of "home improvement" projects that we set for ourselves (then call the professional to FIX my handiwork), work in the yard (we still have half an acre to finish landscaping), wrestle with the dogs and catch the race (root for the 88 and wish that the 42 and 18 would CRASH!)
Billings is a perfect fit for us. Large enough to have all the attractions we want, small enough to be comfortable (and 12 hours from MY in-laws). Now if I could just figure out how to get back to that 6 figure salary...
